SUBCONSCIOUS TRIO BIO

Subconscious Trio was formed in Milan in 2015. The members of the trio are Monique Chao (pianist, vocalist); Victoria Kirilova (upright bassist) and Francesca Remigi (drummer). Their repertoire includes original compositions written and arranged by the three musicians. Their music is a unique mixture of some widely various musical influences stemming from the different cultural heritages of each band member’s origin: Taiwan, Bulgaria and Italy. In their project, jazz has always represented a common ground. Yet jazz has luckily never limited the exploration of the music or integration of diverse aesthetics, such as: Bulgarian and Taiwanese traditional music, Indian music, pop and funk music. Subconscious Trio’s debut album Water Shapes was released in June 2022 by Da Vinci Publishing, and it received multiple recognitions from international magazines such as  Jazz Magazine (France, 2023), Musica Jazz (Italy, 2023), Jazz Critiques (Japan, 2023). The trio was one of the finalist groups of the Isio Saba Competition 2022, of Premio Carlo Gargioni 2023, of Jazz in the Park 2024 (Romania), and winner of the Italia Music Export touring grant Jazz IT Abroad 2023. Within numerous performing experiences in Asian and European festivals and clubs such as JazzMI2019, PianoCity 2018, Gezmataz 2022, Lucca Jazz Donna 2022, Empoli Jazz Festival 2022, Firenze Jazz Festival 2022, Jazz à la Petite France 2023 (Strasbourg), Jazz all’Aquila 2023, Chamber Stage Plovdiv 2023 (Bulgaria), Wien Kultursommer 2023 (Austria), Wenshui Arts Center (Taipei, TW), WiJazz Records (Kaoshiung, TW), Istituto Italiano di Cultura a Taiwan, Diva’s Jazz Festival 2024, Varna Jazz Festival 2024 (Bulgaria), Magenta Jazz Festival 2024, Ambria Jazz Festival 2024, Brillante Jazz Festival 2024, Subconscious Trio is ready for more splendor music journey.

Monique Chao

Monique Chao is a pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader active between Italy, Taiwan, and the international jazz scene. Graduating with top honors in Jazz Composition from the G. Verdi Conservatory, she has released three albums as composer and producer: Mode for Mò (2021), Water Shapes with Subconscious Trio (2022), awarded 4 stars by Jazz Magazine in France, and Time Chamber with the Monique Chao Jazz Orchestra (2024), which received 4.5 stars from DownBeat Magazine in the USA and the title of “Best Album of 2024” from Musica Jazz in Italy. She is the winner of the One Song String Orchestra award in Taiwan as collaborative arranger, the Premio 4e3 at CasmeneFest24 in Italy, and a three-time finalist at the Barga Jazz Festival as composer and arranger. Her compositions and projects are regularly featured in international festivals and series. Monique founded the Monique Chao Jazz Orchestra, a 20-piece ensemble active in Milan, also performing at Blue Note Milano with great public acclaim. She also teaches big band, symphonic orchestra, and big-band composition.

Victoria Kirilova

Double bassist and composer Victoria Kirilova is an active musician on the Viennese and European music scene. Her music interweaves a variety of influences: the richness of harmony and timbre from contemporary jazz and chamber music and the poetry and groove of traditional Bulgarian songs with their asymmetric rhythms. Inspired by themes of unity, inclusivity, and the balance between tradition and innovation, in her album Roots&Skies (Da Vinci Records, 2025) she seeks to create connections between the local and the global through her compositions. A graduate of MUK in Vienna and the Milan Conservatory, Victoria has received prestigious awards including the Start-Stipendium from the Austrian Ministry of Arts and Culture, nominations for Best Album and Newcomer at the Austrian Jazz Prize, the Fidelio Prize (Vienna), and the Italian national Premio delle Arti. She has performed at international festivals such as Bergamo Jazz, Firenze Jazz Festival, Jazz al Parque (Bogotá), Medejazz (Medellín), Amman Jazz Festival, Musiqa 3al Daraj (Petra), Kultursommer (Vienna), Carinthischer Sommer, Novara Jazz, A to Jazz Festival (Sofia), and venues including BOZAR (Brussels), Musikverein and Konzerthaus (Vienna), and Wenshui Art Hall (Taipei). She has recorded for Austrian (Ö1), Italian (RAI), and Bulgarian (BNR) radio, and participated in the Halaqat artist residency of the Goethe-Institut in Brussels and Petra (Jordan), the MuFA mentorship program, and the European project I AM ABROAD with creative sessions in Vienna, Barcelona, and Gothenburg.

Francesca Remigi

Milan/Berlin-based musician, Francesca Remigi is a multifaceted drummer, an inquisitive improviser and a visionary composer. Nuova Generazione Jazz 2021, Top Jazz 2022 (Musica Jazz) and Pathways to Jazz 2024 winner Francesca Remigi is known for her international collaborations in the avant-garde and free improv jazz scene featuring musicians such as Steve Lehman, Danilo Perez, Jen Shyu, Linda May Oh, Val Jeanty, Kris Davis, Camila Nebbia, Marion Hayden, Ellen Rowe, Bruno Chevillon, Alexander Hawkins, Antonello Salis, Gianluigi Trovesi, Tomeka Reid, Angelika Niescier, Nicole Glover, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Yuhan Su, DoYeon Kim, Mario Biondi, Simona Molinari and many others, with appearances at Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2022, Tashkent Jazz Festival 2024, North Sea Jazz Festival 2024, Jarasum Jazz Festival 2024 and Montreaux Jazz Festival 2025. PhD researcher at Conservatorio Frescobaldi in Ferrara Francesca is also a Distinguished Fellow of the Hambidge Center for Arts and Sciences, and a Loghaven Artist Residency Fellow.
